Inwol: A Unique Korean Traditional Liquor Package

Reflecting the Beauty of Korean Culture

Inwol, designed by Kiltae Son, is a one-of-a-kind liquor package that captures the essence of Korean tradition and craftsmanship. Inspired by an old poem that speaks of attracting the moon, this design aims to create a heavenly experience for its users.

The Inwol liquor package is not just a regular gift set; it is a work of art that showcases the beauty of Korean architecture and design. The package is designed to resemble the tiled roof of a Han-ok, a traditional Korean structure, adorned with intricate painted patterns. This unique feature sets it apart from other liquor packages and adds a touch of elegance and sophistication.

What makes Inwol even more special is the selection of liquors it contains. The package includes four different liquors, each representing a different season in Korea. This concept is deeply rooted in Korean culture, where it was customary for ancestors to enjoy different liquors according to the season. By incorporating this tradition into the design, Kiltae Son pays homage to his country's rich cultural heritage.

The realization of the Inwol liquor package is a testament to the designer's commitment to sustainability. The internal package is made of eco-friendly cardboard, allowing users to assemble it into a model of the traditional structure. By arranging the assembled gift sets, users can create a beautiful tiled roof, adding an interactive element to the design.

Assembling the Inwol liquor package is a straightforward process. Users simply need to take out all the contents from the box and assemble the rectangular board and bow tie-shaped board to create the bottle holder. The snack box is placed at the bottom of the holder, and the bottles are placed on top. Once the holders are arranged, the tiled roof comes together, creating a stunning visual display. The white blank space on the package also provides an opportunity to write a personalized message for the recipient, adding a thoughtful touch.

The Inwol liquor package was created in Seoul from November 2017 to June 2018. Kiltae Son's design process involved extensive research into Korean traditional patterns and architecture. The challenge was to incorporate these patterns in a way that distinguishes them from similar features found in other East Asian cultures. By focusing on the unique roof colors of Korean traditional structures and employing modern graphic design techniques, Kiltae Son successfully created a design that is distinctly Korean.

The Inwol liquor package has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2019. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. By winning this award, Inwol has solidified its position as a remarkable example of art, science, design, and technology coming together.

For visitors to Korea, the Inwol liquor package serves as a memorable souvenir. It not only captures the beauty of Korean culture but also provides a unique and immersive experience. Kiltae Son's creation is a testament to his passion for design and his desire to share the wonders of his country with the world.
